The Outset of a Freelancer Trend and Freelancing as a Thriving Career

Written By: Rosanna D. Webb

In 1819, Scottish author Sir Walter Scott identifies Italian and French mercenaries as “freelances”, which means these people were totally free men who offered their personal services to affluent land owners in his book, Ivanhoe.  A freelancer who is also referred to as contractor, telecommuter or independent worker operates independently which in turn results in quite a lot of additional function along with it such as administration, accounts, marketing, contracts, invoices and all sorts of stuffs, that a typical employee need not handle together with their job.

Also, a freelancer is a self-employed individual who offers services directly to clients or any businesses that matches their skills devoid of a middleman that often obtain a slash of the pay. He or she is a person who’s ready to take risks. The risks that includes placing the accountability with regard to their working life and career advancement on themselves. In short, he or she is a risk taker who also has a can-do attitude that is able to work alone without a boss and co-workers around.

Equipped with a laptop/desktop computer and internet, you can start to freelance and work almost anywhere for as long as there is a signal. Almost all sorts of services needed by the majority of businesses could be provided by a freelancer. An array of prevalent freelance opportunities includes jobs like:

  • ·         Accounting/Bookkeeping
  • ·         Administrative Support
  • ·         Advertising
  • ·         Animation
  • ·         Customer Service
  • ·         Data Entry
  • ·         Graphic Design
  • ·         IT
  • ·         Lead Generation
  • ·         Marketing
  • ·         Project Management
  • ·         Programming
  • ·         Social Media Manager
  • ·         SEO
  • ·         Teaching/Tutoring
  • ·         Technical Support
  • ·         Translation
  • ·         Transcription
  • ·         Video Production/Editing
  • ·         VirtualAssistant
  • ·         Voice Over
  • ·         Web Design/Development
  • ·         Writing and Editing

Freelance income ranges based on the skills provided, experience, and your target market. In most cases, freelancers earn around $10 to $75 per hour. Skills that require more education or expertise like accounting or website coding, usually pay more compared to skills that don't require just as much.

What is Freelancing?

Freelancing is a type of work where the worker along with the buyer is not tied to each other beyond the current gig, project or assignment. The buyer is often referred to as a client. The freelancer can also work for other clients. Both of them can decide to continue or stop working with each another as soon as the current gig, project or assignment ends. He or she can work anywhere and whenever he or she wants to which is one the perks of freelancing. Freelancing is not only a trend in US but is currently growing rapidly worldwide.
According to an Upwork Press Release, here are some of the reasons people opt to work freelance:
  • ·         Having a career in freelancing is getting positive responses to more people.
  • ·         Almost 71% of freelancers reported that the number of work they are getting online have increased since 2016.
  • ·         What attracts people to become a freelancer are the following: a) no boss, b) flexible time, c) select projects they like, d) to earn extra income.

Today, there are already many freelancers around the world as freelancing became a trend. It is predicted that remote working will be the future of work. Most startup companies tend to hire independent remote workers with the target of getting the best workers. New technologies support this kind of working environment as more cloud based products are being produced.
