NOW HIRING: PHP Engineer

Company: Help Scout
Website: https://www.helpscout.com/
Headquarters: Boston, MA, United States

PHP is at the heart of Help Scout’s web app-- it touches nearly everything we do. Your work will empower over 9,000 businesses around the world to provide great customer service, and will support other senior engineers on your team. Our engineering organization is just over forty people, around half the company. You will join a small cross-functional crew that includes product management, designers, JavaScript, quality and other PHP engineers.  Everyone on the team is a senior professional in their craft.

Tools we use:

  • PHP 7.x
  • Lumen, Laravel, Symfony Console, and a custom PHP framework with League components
  • MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB
  • RabbitMQ
  • Redis
  • React & Redux, Backbone & Marionette
  • Webpack, Babel, ES6, and Pusher
  • Modular and functional CSS with Help Scout Seed
  • Component-based design systems with Help Scout Blue

About the role

On a typical day you may help a customer with an issue, work on a new feature, create a third party integration or enhance back-end tools. On any given project, you will be communicating with internal APIs, integrating with 3rd party services, optimizing processes using Redis, RabbitMQ and various AWS services, and wrapping it all up in support of a React or Backbone/Marionette front end.

Our engineering teams work in two-week iterations, communicate mostly via Slack and are committed to remote, agile development. When you are ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with test cases and tag your team for review.  The team pair as needed over video or screen-sharing sessions.
We have invested heavily in local Docker development and AWS-based continuous integration and delivery so you can get setup fast.  Any development branch can be easily tested on environments that closely match production. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.

Your team performs engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our top-notch support team. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help our customers and improve the product along the way.

Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code could be changed to positively impact their experience in terms of performance, security, privacy and usability.

You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day. The founders are technical and committed to creating a magical experience for customers. You'll deploy work that moves the needle for businesses around the world.

About you

  • You are very experienced with modern PHP development practices and open source frameworks. You’ve engineered other SaaS projects at scale and feel confident solving difficult problems.
  • You are comfortable designing elegant solutions that degrade gracefully when faced with extreme load or stress.
  • You view“best practices” as a starting point for critical thinking, rather than a dogma to follow.
  • You have modern JavaScript skills including frameworks and can utilize them when needed. If you have worked with React/Redux or Backbone/Marionette, that is great, but it is not required. We can help you pick it up.
  • Your code is not only reliable and performant for customers, but can be read, maintained and understood easily by other engineers on your team. The Zen of Python resonates with you for any language.
  • You believe in writing unit and integration tests and have at least tried TDD.
  • You like owning the quality of the code you write — QA doesn’t mean throwing it over the wall for someone else to test.
  • You understand that some things are too costly to automate and must be manually tested to get it right.
  • You take pride in your work and ownership of the solutions you build. When a team member or customer is in need, you feel a sense of urgency to understand their pain and thoughtfully help.
  • You are curious and constantly learning. Believing that“a rising tide lifts all ships,” you make everyone around you better sharing what you have learned and looking for ways to improve both yourself and the team.
  • You enjoy the finish work and detail required to deliver a rich product with exceptional UX. From UI interactions to handling important edge cases, you take satisfaction in delivering a solid experience that delights the users, adds value to the business, and lasts over time.
  • You are a humble professional who wants to be challenged by the work and not the workload. You are willing to ask for help when necessary and unafraid to say,“I don’t know.”
  • You are proactive about solving problems and improving things.
  • You take the initiative to build tools and processes that will help everyone.
  • You leave things better than you found them.
  • You are an excellent communicator who can write and speak with empathy for our customers and team.
  • You can easily communicate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences. Clear communication is super important in a remote culture like ours.
  • You believe remote teams are the future of work, or are at least excited about the idea.
  • You have experience working with remote teams or can adjust your work/management style to be remote-friendly.
  • You can work anywhere in the world as long as you have 4+ hours of overlap time with Boston, MA(9AM - 6PM ET).

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary - We pay at or above market salary in most cases and evaluate a lot of research to make sure everyone is paid well. The formula we use to calculate all salaries is public to employees and is improved upon regularly.
  • Work anywhere - Provided you have 4 hours of overlap with the team. We’ll fly you to Boston for a week of new employee on-boarding
  • Health and dental insurance - We cover you and your family's health/dental insurance 100%. If you are based in the US, we'll cover you on our Aetna policy. If you're based outside the US, we'll reimburse your out-of-pocket health and dental insurance costs.

Instead, you’ll be surrounded by driven, supportive teammates who will push you to be better. We take work/life harmony seriously, too, as we want every career at Help Scout to be a long and satisfying one.

Diversity & Inclusion

We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to building a company that embraces and celebrates diversity and inclusion. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We have read the studies and understand that diverse teams build better products, bring more perspective to the table, contribute to a company’s financial success and help foster a more inclusive environment for all employees, but the bottom line is that it's the right thing to do.

NOW HIRING: PHP Engineer

Company: SkyVerge
Website: https://www.skyverge.com/
Headquarters: Boston, Massachusetts USA

Howdy 👋We’re the folks at SkyVerge, and we build WordPress plugins that help over 100k+ eCommerce businesses grow and manage their WooCommerce stores. Our team is 100% remote, with 19 people distributed all over the world.

We’re looking for a driven, experienced, full-stack PHP Engineer to join our growing engineering team and build new features while maintaining our existing portfolio of 60+ individual extensions.

The Role

You’ll focus on building new features and maintaining existing code, while also helping with code reviews and customer support. With over 60 different plugins, there’s a wide variety of work. You might spend time on some complicated frontend interactions using JS, then switch focus to working with a tricky external REST API for a while, and later work on adding unit/acceptance tests to our framework code.

You’ll have the opportunity to really dive into a problem and understand it before crafting a well-engineered, high quality solution. We believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time to think and code.

Our plugins are built on top of WordPress and designed to work with WooCommerce, so we use PHP 5.3+ (moving soon to PHP 5.6 minimum) and we write all new JS in ES6. We follow a superset of the WordPress coding standards and actively invest in tooling & testing to improve both the quality of our products and the happiness of our team building them.

We work primarily through GitHub and Slack, so you should be able to clearly express your ideas via comments and messages. All new code is tested and peer-reviewed, so you’ll be able to both learn from the rest of the team and share your knowledge.

As one of our senior engineers, the team will look to you for advice and direction. You’ll help shape our best practices, decide on libraries & tooling, and refactor older or underperforming parts of the codebase. You’ll also be responsible for moving your projects forward, communicating your progress and milestones with others, and clearly documenting your work.

Here are some things you may do on a given day:

  • Research and write a pitch to refactor the data model for our shipping extension
  • Refactor an underperforming class after profiling it in your local environment
  • Troubleshoot an issue with our Memberships plugin by deep-diving into the content restriction class
  • Analyze a slow SQL query and suggest ways to improve it
  • Construct a detailed, multi-step data migration to move data from a custom post type to a custom table, write unit tests for it, and manually user test / QA it.
  • Review a pull request from another team member for readability, maintainability, and adherence to standards, and provide suggested improvements
  • Review new API documentation for one of our integration plugins and draft a story to upgrade to it

On the first day you will:

  • Meet your team and get familiar with how we work
  • Setup your local environment and tooling
  • Commit a small tweak to a plugin and open a pull request for peer review

In the first week you will:

  • Develop, QA, review, and ship a small feature improvement
  • Participate in code review for a teammate’s code
  • Help a team member with fixing a bug

In the first month you will:

  • Work closely with the product team to ship a large feature
  • Participate in your first support rotation week and help our support team with escalated issues
  • Handle deploying a set of plugin releases using our internal tools
  • Publish a retrospective on your first large project to share successes & planned improvements for the next project

REQUIREMENTS

You

You love solving engineering challenges in the most pragmatic way possible. You write code that's clear, readable, and standards-compliant. More importantly, you keep the end user in mind and love getting feedback from customers to help improve our products.

Finally, you can’t wait to join a small team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ship your work. You’re an excellent writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a bug report, chatting in Slack, editing a wiki page, or drafting a retrospective. You know that code is about communication and explaining your thought process clearly goes hand-in-hand.

Our team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, Clubhouse, Google Docs, Basecamp, and weekly stand-ups via Zoom (a few short meetings) — we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time that’s free of distractions.

As a remote team, we believe that regular meetups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so you should be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about what those are like? Check out our recap of our last team retreat (SkyTrip), which brought the entire team out to Lake Tahoe, California for a week. It’s a plus if you think (like we do) that bears are absolutely the coolest animals in the forest. 🐻

This is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with commits, issues closed, and wiki edits.

Process

After an initial screening, you’ll get an email with a few questions to answer. Following that, you’ll have a few 45 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company.

The most qualified candidates will then be invited to complete a short one-day research project. If this goes well, we'll invite you to the final stage of our evaluation process: the trial project. During this ~2 week period, you'll work closely with your future manager, as well as a few other team members, as a paid contractor to implement your proposal from the research project.

You'll be welcomed in Slack, introduced to any team members you may be working with, and will have regular chats with your future manager to share feedback and make sure all is going well. Already working full time? Don't worry! We design the trial project assuming someone already has a full time job. We won't ask you to work crazy hours, and we keep your project scoped accordingly.

This brief trial period is a great way for you to make sure you enjoy the work and the team, and it also gives us an opportunity to do the same. At the end of the period, assuming a great experience for all, you'll be offered a full time position 🎉Then the real fun and full onboarding experience will begin! 😄

BENEFITS

Here are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:

- Competitive salary

- Annual incentive for meeting team and company goals

- 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June 😀)

- Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents)

- 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents)

- Up to 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers

- Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection

- Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive

- Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences)

- Home office or co-working allowance

- A Kindle to help you keep learning

We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.

Applications accepted through April 15th.

NOW HIRING: Senior Mobile Application Developer

Company: Duck Duck Go Inc
Website: https://duckduckgo.com
Headquarters: Paoli, Pennsylvania USA

We are a diverse team from around the world, working together on a mission to set a new standard of trust online.  Join our Mobile team as a remote Senior Mobile Application Developer and help shape the DuckDuckGo iOS and Android experiences.

As part of our growing team, you will be collaborating with team members at all levels to identify and close major gaps in our products.  Examples of projects you might work on include: building out and improving mobile content blocking, improving installation conversion, or running experiments to investigate and improve the usability of our mobile apps. You will be directly responsible for mobile application features, taking ownership over product maintenance, and driving improvements in both our iOS and Android applications.

We are fully remote and seek to empower our team to be self-directed and self-motivated in their projects. If that seems awesome and you like the idea of our core values -- build trust, question assumptions, and validate direction -- you'll fit right in!

What you will do:

  • Lead development of projects by taking vague problems, scoping them into high impact projects, and executing them against a set of success criteria
  • Play a key role in improving the software architecture
  • Take responsibility for solving product issues – large and small.
  • Implement mobile solutions to improve our iOS and Android apps directly.
  • Collaborate with peers on product brainstorms, technical design discussions, pair programming sessions and code reviews.
  • Write pragmatic, testable code that works consistently across devices and is performant.

What we are looking for:

  • Significant cross-platform mobile engineering experience (5+ years) in iOS and Android
  • Expertise working on at least one large application
  • Effective project management skills
  • Familiarity with MVC/MVVC concepts and how they apply to mobile applications
  • Familiarity with mobile threading and memory management
  • Ability to develop and use complicated data structures and algorithms. This includes understanding the fundamentals, as well as navigating and improving existing code.
  • Ability to develop effective UX solutions through user feedback loops, leveraging both quantitative and qualitative metrics.
  • Creative problem solvers and risk takers. You like to take initiative in pushing a project forward but know when to get others involved.
  • Strong communication skills. You can validate and communicate your decisions clearly.

Other things to know:

  • We are a small, remote team in different time zones and communicate with a variety of tools throughout the day. You should feel comfortable with the intricacies of this type of work situation.
  • Sometimes we meet up! You can expect to travel at least 2x a year: once for our all-hands meetup and another for a team retreat (each ~4-5 days)
  • We want to have a major impact on raising the standard of trust online. To do this we believe in a focused approach, with company-wide objectives, and with each team member working on a single top priority at a time.
  • Our work philosophy is built upon empowered project management. All team members have opportunities to run projects.
  • All projects are run transparently, and we encourage everyone to participate in areas of interest throughout the company. Anyone and everyone can (and should) ask questions and offer feedback around the product and internal projects.
  • We try to exemplify our values (build trust, question assumptions, and validate direction) in everything we do.

DuckDuckGo does not work with any recruiting agencies or services.  A big part of our culture is to work with each candidate on a one-to-one basis throughout our unique hiring process.

DuckDuckGo provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment, and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.

And on top of that, as the first ever content designer at Zapier, you’ll play an important role in establishing the practice at the company.

We know applying for and taking on a new job at any company requires a leap of faith. We want you to feel comfortable and excited to apply at Zapier. To help share a bit more about life at Zapier, here are a few resources in addition to the job description that can give you an inside look at what life is like at Zapier. Hopefully, you'll take the leap of faith and apply.

Our Commitment to Applicants

  • Culture and Values at Zapier
  • Zapier Guide to Remote Work
  • Zapier Code of Conduct
  • Diversity and Inclusivity at Zapier
  • Zapier is proud to be an equal opportunity workplace dedicated to pursuing and hiring a diverse workforce.

About you

You’re an excellent writer. You can communicate clearly and succinctly. You have a firm grasp on the rules of grammar, know how to adjust your tone for a context, and create content quickly.

You have a user-centered approach to content design. You use user research to inform your writing. You know that the words we use in an interface are a critical part of the experience. You’re familiar with the process of user-centered design and you've worked hand-in-hand with designers.

You have experience creating and enforcing a style guide. You know that consistency is key and are able to create rules and catch when they’re broken. You know how to develop content frameworks that fit within brand guidelines and can live as part of a design system.

You might have experience writing documentation. If you have experience crafting support documentation that helps users learn and troubleshoot a product that’s a huge plus.

You’re a strong information architect. You should have experience conducting card-sorts and creating site maps, and be able to quickly make decisions about where a new page should fall in a hierarchy.

You know how to break complex material into digestible chunks. Zapier is a technical product with a lot of complexity. You’ll need to find ways to explain difficult concepts in ways anyone can understand and work across the company to ensure we use the same language everywhere.

You’re a systems thinker. You will drive the process for creating and maintaining content across many teams. You’ll need to think in terms of processes and see how the work of other parts of the company relates to the help center.

You enjoy being a leader and coach for others. This is the first content designer role at Zapier, so there will be a big role to play in educating others about content design and defining the discipline at the company.

You’re a quick study. With over 1,000 app integrations on Zapier, there’s a lot to learn. You’ll need to be able to digest a lot of information and get up to speed fast.

Things you might do

  • Write, organize, and update product documentation—a lot of it. Zapier is always changing, and with over 1,000 apps on Zapier's platform, we have a lot of ground to cover with our documentation. The first order of business for this role is to make sure that users can learn how to use the product and solve their problems in the help center.
  • Build and maintain a style guide and controlled vocabulary. Approve all help content before it goes into the help center to make sure it follows the style guide.
  • Work with the support team to identify new content we need and collaborate with them to write the docs. You’ll tap into the expertise that comes from being in constant communication with our users to make sure we have the content we need, and you’ll serve as an editor and mentor to level up the contributions from the rest of the team.
  • Contribute content to our upcoming support forums and drive the content strategy that will help us determine what kind of content to put into the community.
  • Coordinate with our editorial, marketing, and email teams to build a cohesive content strategy.
  • Work with product designers to create solutions to our users’ needs. Sometimes this will mean working out some microcopy. Other times it will mean designing entire organization and navigation systems alongside the design of page templates.
  • Participate in user research activities. You’ll talk to users to better understand their mental models and needs, and conduct usability and comprehension testing of the content you write to make sure it addresses those needs.
  • Monitor the performance of content and use that data to continuously improve it. You’ll work with the data team to monitor usage analytics, track customer feedback to spot trends and gaps, and proactively identify new opportunities to improve key business metrics through improved content and usability.
  • Create and manage a content calendar. You’ll plan for what content needs to be produced to align with product changes and new releases, and work both independently and with others to hit deadlines.
  • Drive content governance. You’ll be the bottom-line owner of help content, serving as the final say of what gets published and where.
  • Give, seek, and receive thoughtful critical feedback. You’ll help others become better writers and become a better writer yourself.
