NOW HIRING: Senior Software Engineer

Company: Wallaroo Labs
Website: https://www.wallaroolabs.com
Headquarters: New York, United States

Wallaroo Labs is working on a huge idea, and this is a phenomenal opportunity for a person who enjoys challenges. We want to enable organizations to harness the power of data
to realize their boldest ideas, much faster, and with greater efficiency than ever before - all without any data engineering.

Our goal is to deploy and operate high performance computing infrastructure so customers don't have to. That’s why we’re building next-generation tools like Wallaroo, a highly efficient stream-processing engine that scales to volumes that traditional big data solutions can’t.

Our technology runs as a service inside a client’s own environment, whether in any cloud, on-premise, or at the edge, and plays nicely with modern data, messaging, analytics, and machine learning ecosystems.

We believe this is a $40B+ market opportunity and we aim to take a good chunk of it. We’re a seed-stage company that’s raised $6M from some of the best enterprise software investors in NYC, and we’re looking for ambitious people to grow our team and our business, enhance our culture, and contribute great ideas.

The Position

We believe in hiring strong engineers and letting them apply their unique skills and experiences to make our team and product better. That said, there are a few must-have requirements that are needed to do well in our environment. Beyond those, we are looking for candidates who have skills that draw from our "nice to have qualifications" list.

Requirements:
  • Experience building high-volume data processing applications
  • Experience deploying and running production systems at scale
  • Experience analyzing and improving system performance
  • Experience developing software and deployment systems for AWS or other cloud providers
  • Experience developing on *Nix system (shell, scripts, tools, etc) with version control (e.g. git)
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent written and verbal skills, and good at async communication
  • A self-guided learner with the ability to pick up new skills and languages quickly
  • Desire to help those around you grow and learn from you
  • Thrive in an environment where the long-term goal remains stable but day-to-day needs may change quickly

Nice to Have Qualifications:
  • Experience running production systems
  • Prior experience working with customers either external or business-oriented
  • Experience working with/designing/building distributed systems
  • Experience developing multi-threaded programs
  • Experience using a "strongly typed" language
  • Experience developing compilers
  • Experience with supporting running systems
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code systems (Ansible, Terraform, Pulimi, etc)
  • Experience analyzing system performance
  • Experience developing for AWS or other cloud systems
  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Strong algorithmic and mathematical skills
  • Strong understanding of memory management (manual memory management, garbage collection)
  • Familiarity with open-source streaming data and message queuing technologies

Engineering Values

Distributed First

We are a fully distributed team with a base of operations in NYC and engineers ranging from California to the Netherlands. Our processes are always distributed first, with an emphasis on effective asynchronous communication.

Communication
  • One of our mottos is: “If it wasn’t communicated, it didn’t happen.” Communication is always crucial to effective collaboration, but in a distributed setting it becomes even more important.
  • Email, text chat, and documentation are important tools to communicate across time zones and geography. Voice conferences bring us together despite working in different countries.
  • We bring up concerns early, and share objectives, context and work progress in public. We value clarity and making assumptions explicit.
Lifelong Learning

We value a commitment to learning, and see the ability to quickly get up to speed on new languages, technologies, and ideas as just as important as specialized knowledge, if not more. We stress a growth mindset, and know that listening can take effort but is crucial to understanding.

Self-motivation and Accountability

Our engineers excel at working independently and flexibly collaborating with the right people for the job. We proactively get involved when help is needed.

Respect and Openness

We know that we’re working with human beings with their own lives, concerns, and perspectives. We strive for charitable interpretation and empathy. We value constructive disagreement and challenging assumptions, but only when this is done with respect. We realize that even if you are an expert in some area, you can still learn from the fresh perspectives of novices, which means humility is not only reasonable, but essential to overcoming blind spots.

The Right Tool for the Job

We know that in software engineering, there are no silver bullets. No language, framework, tool, or process is “The One, True Way”. We look for the right tool for the job, and depending on the circumstances, this may or may not be Wallaroo!

Adaptability

Our engineers have to be ready to adapt to changing circumstances and temporarily take on roles that might be a bit outside their job description. We value comfort with uncertainty and an openness to experimentation.

Everyone a Teacher

In a smaller startup, we need everyone to be a generalist to some degree. That’s part of the reason we value sharing knowledge, skills, and perspectives so much. Our engineers are eager to keep learning, but they’re also eager to teach their colleagues what they know, and to experiment with more effective ways to make this kind of information readily available.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Nathan James is looking for a Head of Logistics to join our team in providing the best product availability and delivery service for our customers.

People-first company, design-first home.

We are a design-first, home furnishing company focusing on the habits of urban dwellers and first time home buyers. We pride ourselves on the best in class customer happiness, providing the highest possible quality products that are affordable for the majority and assembly that isn’t dreadful.

As a people-first company, we understood from day one the importance of being fully distributed. We encourage everyone to work in a whichever manner that helps them perform their best.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

You’ll be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of transportation, warehousing, and order fulfillment for Nathan James. You’ll help the operations team by managing relationships with all logistics 3rd parties, assisting with high level planning, continual improvement implementation, and creative cost reduction ideation/execution. As the driver of the Logistics Division, you will also have ample opportunity to carve out your own passion projects related to operational improvements and cost reductions.

A deep understanding of operations management, particularly focused on inbound and outbound modeling, is a pre-requisite for succeeding in this role. Managing both an internal team and external partners also requires being able to provide support from multiple perspectives regarding any aspect related to operational processes. Since this division and these processes are susceptible to continual change, the ideal candidate has the unique ability to quickly learn and teach these procedures.

During training, you’ll be expected to be proactive in your process and learn quickly. Once fully up-to-speed (2-3 months), you’ll have a complete understanding and ownership of day-to-day operations, provide managerial guidance to members of the Logistics Division, have the ability to monitor and report on Logistics KPIs, as well as, be able to verify and approve all invoices related to the Logistics Division.

ABOUT YOU:

We’re looking for someone with the ability to work in an agile environment by being proactive, flexible, efficient and task-focused. This means being a great problem-solver and having the technical strengths to find solutions and correct unforeseen issues extremely quickly. You should be able to constantly juggle daily decisions that directly impact the divisional KPIs, planning of logistics activity and growing volumes for 6-12 months out, as well as re-enforcing/implementing procedures to standardize divisional activity. You have a strong team mentality and ability to not only do what is asked, but to do what you believe is needed.

You can attribute most of what you love about the projects and tasks you work on to having an element of problem solving. You have a pragmatic mind that enables you to be decisive, but you understand the theoretical practices of optimizing supply chains and how important it is to continue to implement where feasible. Logistics has always been an area of interest to you because you enjoy the challenges involved with continually fine-tuning processes and you welcome new challenges that seem to occur in a field with so many moving parts. It excites you to be a leader in the operational backbone of a company continuing to reach new heights every year.

We would like to see at a minimum of three years’ experience in designing operational systems, managing 3PL/warehouses, handling order fulfillment, and managing others in the logistics field. Advanced ability in excel, database management, project management, time management and the ability to manage people is essential to success in this role. The ideal candidate would also have a degree in a quantitative discipline with extensive education and/or experience within the logistics field of a primarily e-commerce company.

For this role, please note that our current 3PL operates between 7am-4pm PST. While it will not be required for you to work during these hours, there will be days where orders will need to be monitored and troubleshot throughout operating hours to ensure on-time delivery.

This is a remote role, since we are a remote/fully distributed company! You’re free to work where you work best, anywhere in the world: home office, coworking space, or coffee shops. You should be comfortable working remotely, that hinges on effective writing, self-discipline, and comfort with open communication.

BENEFITS & PERKS:

Our benefits are all aimed at supporting a life well lived, both at work and away from work.
We’re all about reasonable working hours, sharing, ample vacation time, wellness, education, comfort, and giving back. See our benefits and perks here: https://nathanjames.com/blogs/latest/benefits-perks-nathan-james

HOW TO APPLY:

There are no right answers or cookie-cutter expectations. A cover letter is not required, but those that clearly demonstrate how Nathan James would be a great fit for you and how you would be a great fit for us will be given full attention and are highly appreciated.

We’re accepting applications until 05/12/2020 00:00:00 UTC.

Next: We expect to take a few days to review all applications.

You’ll hear from us by 5/21/2020 about advancement to an introductory call. If we both find the fit to right, then we would proceed to a work sample, then on to a interview. Our interviews are one hour to 1.5 hours all remote by Whereby video chat (no software needed), with your future colleagues, on your schedule.

We aim to make an offer by 7/3/2020 at the latest with a start date in mid July.

We appreciate your consideration in having Nathan James be part of your career. Our open conversation starts with this post. We look forward to hearing from you.
