Designlab is looking for a junior curriculum writer to help us with our rapidly-growing online education platform.

As we continue to develop our courses, we’re looking to bring on a junior curriculum writer who can produce high-quality curriculum content that’s true to the Designlab brand. We expect a good candidate to have a background in education or design, but we’re open to any candidate with evidence of effective content creation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Work with our Curriculum Lead to execute curriculum creation
  • Contribute to curriculum & course ideation and planning
  • Conduct in-depth research on UX/UI/product design topics as briefed
  • Synthesize this research to produce engaging, in-depth lesson content following instructional design best practices and Designlab’s curriculum voice/style guide
  • Responsibly source images for use in content
  • Help maintain bug-free, and up-to-date live curriculum
  • Create additional supporting content for curriculum (e.g. scripts for audio/video, onboarding guide content, quizzes, briefs for PDF downloadables, and more)


Person Specification

Skills and abilities:

  • You have excellent written & communication skills
  • You can observe a voice/style guide and write concisely
  • You can research unfamiliar topics and distill the key points
  • You understand basic principles of successful online education and materials

Qualifications and experience:

  • You have a proven track record of effective content creation
  • You have existing background knowledge of digital product design (or would be interested in immersing yourself)

Character and personal qualities:

  • You enjoy collaborative work
  • You adopt a positive attitude towards feedback on your work
  • You are able to work independently, with a large degree of autonomy within a remote work environment

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in HTML & CSS
  • Knowledge of instructional design principles
  • Video or audio editing skills
  • Previous experience of our product and community

ABOUT THE ROLE

We have over 400+ amazing designers from around the world mentoring on Designlab and are looking to grow this team. If you have a passion for design and get inspired by the thought of building the next generation of world-class designers, then this opportunity could be for you.

As a Designlab mentor, you will work with amazing students from around the world; connect to other top designers; and earn money while giving back to the design community. If your application is successful, you will be paired with students whose availability matches yours and you will mentor them through the duration of their course.

Designlab mentorship is part-time and flexible – you choose how many students you can take on per month, and in which courses, at the times that suit you. If you’re ready for a higher commitment role, you can apply to mentor for our more rigorous, advanced courses like UX Academy and Career Services.

Once you have committed to a student, you will need to be available to mentor them on a weekly basis for the duration of their course.

We are currently looking for UX Academy mentors and Career Coaches.

  • UX Academy (part-time students): 1 x 1 hour video call per week and written feedback on project submissions for 28 weeks
  • UX Academy (full-time students): 2 x 1 hour video calls per week and written feedback on project submissions for 15 weeks
  • Career Services: 1 x 30 minute video call per week and written feedback on project submissions for 12 weeks


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mentor students on their design coursework while they undertake Designlab's online courses through:
  • Providing timely and detailed written feedback on student submissions
  • Conducting 1:1 video sessions with students via Skype/Zoom/Google Hangouts
  • Maintain up-to-date availability for sessions
  • Communicate promptly via the platform to schedule student sessions


REQUIREMENTS

UX Academy

  • 3+ years of UX/UI design experience, ideally in a senior or manager role
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Passion for education, design, and creative work

Career Coaching

  • Hiring manager experience in the U.S.
  • 3+ years of UX/UI design experience, ideally in a senior or manager role

COMPENSATION

The compensation for mentors role is as follows:

  • UX Academy Mentors (part-time students): $60 per student per week, paid monthly
  • UX Academy Mentors (full-time students): $120 per student per week, paid monthly
  • Career Services Mentors: $37.50 per student per week, paid monthly

Bear Group is a leading web development firm looking for an experienced sr. web developer to join our team of Drupal and Magento experts. You will have the opportunity to work with leading companies and marketing teams to support complex sites and integrations between systems. Bear Group operates as a distributed company, with headquarters in Seattle, WA, but this is a fully remote position.


Sr. Web Developer & Solution Architect

With Bear Group, you will tackle technical problems, code and debug, and occasionally participate in client meetings. You will need to be self-motivated and able to work independently most of the time, but we have a friendly and capable team to collaborate with when you encounter obstacles. The type of work depends on the client, but often includes:

  • Supporting a small number of clients who are participating in the Run State subscription support program.
  • Triaging incoming tickets for your base of clients.
  • Providing a full range of development from a conceptual solution architect, presenting ideas, upgrading platforms, triaging bugs, system issues to small front-end tweaks.
  • Supporting custom-built extensions, integrations, and UX since most clients in Run State are coming in from Bear Group custom development projects.
  • Conducting QA on all primary work, with good repro steps provided to TPM / Client.
  • Providing clear and concise written communication to clients via Jira ticketing.


General Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields, plus a minimum of 5+ years of related work experience.
  • Strong expertise in building eCommerce and CMS websites using frameworks.
  • Preference for client-service environments—web development firms, interactive agencies, graphic design firms.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent schedule, set realistic deadlines, manage budgets, coordinate internal and external resources, and accurately estimate resource requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry trends in emerging and existing web technologies.
  • Independence, enthusiasm, superb communication, leadership, management, organization skills.


Technical Qualifications

  • 5+ years in web development and strong PHP experience; experience with the Zend framework a plus.
  • Experience with Drupal or Magento and their respective APIs (Magento 2 certification a plus).
  • Experience integrating with third-party APIs and web services.
  • Basic LAMP server administration experience, MySQL knowledge, and Git administration.
  • Education or professional experience with C#, Java or Ruby are beneficial. Most coding projects are currently in PHP. Understanding of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) and Model-View-Controller (MVC) frameworks.
  • Understanding of content organization and concepts within information architecture.
  • Front-end and standard Internet protocols, cross-browser, XML, HTML, HTTP, XHTML, CSS, Javascript (jquery), Ajax, Twig and PHP at the template level, React, Redux, Angular or other JS frameworks.

We do require at least 4 hours of working time overlap with the Pacific time zone (PST) workday. HOURS

This role starts as part-time freelance for 5-7 hours per week, but we’re looking for someone with the desire and flexibility to add more hours soon, if we both find the relationship working well. Given that most of our customers are in the U.S., we generally work U.S. business hours, so you should have consistent availability within 9 am - 6 pm Eastern Time hours (if you’re an early bird and want to work from Pacific Time, or a night owl who wants to work from European hours, we don’t care, but we’ll need to be reliably able to reach you during these hours). You’ll need consistent availability between the hours of 11 AM - 3 PM Eastern (for potential video calls), and our lead designer is in New York.
