CC and the CCGN seek to increase and scale our impact and effectiveness globally, finding ways to create value for network members and society by promoting collaboration, mentorship, networking, and meaningful change. Fueling, supporting, motivating, and listening to the CCGN is paramount to scaling CC’s mission; this position is central to accomplishing these critical, shared goals.

Creative Commons is looking for a Network Manager passionate about working with a global open community, open culture, open licensing, and the public domain. The Network Manager will report to the Director of Ecosystem Strategy and will work closely with the CCGN, the Open Policy Manager, and cross-organizationally, including with the CC Open Education, Communications, Legal, and GLAM teams.

This position will support and scale the Creative Commons Global Network. Three years after implementing the Creative Commons Global Network Strategy, the CCGN is in a crucial moment: having established the basic infrastructure (CC Chapters, Network Platforms and decision making committees), it’s now time to grow and leverage its potential. This position is an essential role to support, facilitate, plan and frame collaboration and connectivity across the CCGN and other groups in the open ecosystem. The Network Manager will be involved in development programs, projects, and opportunities to enhance the ability of the network to work together.


The Network Manager’s main responsibilities are:
  • Supporting the CCGN structure by, among other things:
  • Assisting the different formal CCGN structures (CC Chapters, Network Platforms, Committees) to accomplish their goals;
  • Helping facilitate meetings and prepare reports; and
  • Considering and recommending appropriate policies governing the CCGN structures.
  • Managing projects that enhance the ability of the network to work together, including organizing network-related tracks at the CC Global Summit.
  • Supporting promotion and collaboration in CC HQ-led initiatives, including communications outreach, campaigns (e.g., copyright reform, open education), and fundraising.
  • Leading onboarding of new members of the CCGN by building strong relationships between CC Chapters, sharing key information, identifying and facilitating opportunities for collaboration.
  • Facilitating member engagement through capacity development initiatives, developing corresponding tools and approaches.
  • Collecting and sharing information about existing CCGN members and CC Chapters: who they are; what they work on; what their interests are; successes and challenges.
  • Stimulating CC Chapters to communicate about their work through social media, connect CC Chapters with CC HQ communication staff.
  • Establishing and maintaining a high level of responsiveness and connection; facilitate warm connections in response to inquiries with CC staff, CCGN members, and partners.
  • Providing rapid responses to questions, and coordinate internal communications within CC HQ for CCGN members and partners.
  • Enhancing and scaling the impact of collaboration on the CCGN, supporting local projects and helping to share best practices and lessons learned.
  • Supporting and coordinating capacity-building for CCGN members and groups, with CC Chapter website templates, fundraising, social media and volunteer management.
  • Providing opportunities for those who are not always highly visible to be heard, promote and advocate for cultural diversity and gender equality in CC projects globally, including promoting diversity, equity and inclusion principles; support organizational change towards a more diverse, open culture.
  • Developing standardized materials for CC Chapters to support and foster collaboration, help them engage in the CCGN with CC HQ and each other.
  • Identifying opportunities for cross-collaboration projects and initiatives both inside the Network and with CC HQ.

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess many or all of the following skills:
  • 3-5 years of experience in community management, working in a diverse distributed global community, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse geographic, racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, and gender backgrounds.
  • Experience working with a diverse community of stakeholders, including open and collaborative online communities and networks across cultures and time zones.
  • The ability to successfully navigate challenging conversations among diverse groups and build consensus.
  • A critical mind that can prioritize the myriad opportunities to foster the CCGN, and identify and assist CC in focussing its resources toward opportunities where CC can provide value to its members, institutional members, and participants.
  • Experience network building at the local and national levels, with a thorough understanding of networking principles, particularly in the global south.
  • Independent thinking and analytical problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-motivated, self-starter, team player.
  • Fluency in verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Comfortable working remotely.

The ideal candidate may also have
  • Additional language proficiency is very desirable, in particular, Spanish, French and/or Arabic.
  • Experience with fundraising

Work environment and location

Creative Commons is a fully-distributed organization — we have no central office. This position is in a remote working environment and you can be anywhere in the world. Ideally, you should be available for reserving some office hours for meetings between 1 PM to 6 PM UTC, considering the time zones differences within CC staff. You must have reasonable mobility for travel to twice-annual, all-staff meetings, and the CC Global Summit (at least 3 trips per year, some of which will be international depending on your location). We provide a subsidy towards high-speed broadband access. Laptop/desktop computer and necessary resources are supplied.


Salary and benefits

Creative Commons is a leading non-profit employer, offering competitive salaries and benefits, including health and wellness plans, annual retirement contributions, and a positive, supportive work environment. We offer competitive salary in the range for this position from $55,000 to $70,000 USD annually, commensurate with relevant skills, experience, and location.
