NOW HIRING: Back End Developer

Company: Politech
Website: http://politech.io
Headquarters: Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

Politech creates digital products and technology solutions for nonprofits, campaigns, and foundations. Our primary focus has been to assist progressive organizations, particularly those influencing the policy and political landscape, that advocate on behalf of underserved communities. Our software platforms have been a vital part of keeping such organizations successful and efficient.

Who We Are

We are deeply committed to public service and progressive social change. We are 100% minority owned and operated with a diverse team, inclusive of gender, ethnicity, and race.

Position Summary

This role will focus on dev ops and back end/API development, but the ideal candidate will have a full stack skillset. Our stack is Postgres/Ruby/Rails/React. Right now we have a mix of HTML+jQuery and React but we are in the process of moving toward split app architecture. As part of that process we are building out a REST API and revamping our deployment environment. The latter would be the main focus of this position, but it would also involve pitching in on the React side of things when required.

We are seeking someone with excellent communication skills who will work as a team player and a self-starter. The ideal candidate should have mid-level experience, but they won’t be placed in some hierarchical structure. This position will work directly with the other developers, and will report directly to the CEO. The individual should be highly motivated to make a difference and to have an impact on moving progressive issues forward. Our employees’ opinions matter to us for the success of the company, and we want you to bring creative solutions to make our work better for our clients. Interest and understanding of politics and campaigns is a plus but not required.

Our employees are from all over the country, and bring varying levels of experience to the company. First and foremost, we value honesty from all employees within our firm. We strongly encourage a work environment centered on open communication and conscientiousness. Working remotely gives our employees the ability to better maintain a work-life balance, but we expect that productivity and job performance will not be sacrificed.

We are a fully remote team so you will need to be flexible to work with staff in different time zones when necessary.

Responsibilities
  • Improve and maintain deployment environment and tools
  • Design and build efficient, reusable, and reliable Ruby code
  • Integration of data storage solutions Postgresql and Redis
  • Expand and improve test coverage
  • Identify bottlenecks and bugs then devise solutions to these problems
  • Help maintain code quality, organization, and automation
  • Integrations with external APIs

Skills
  • Experience setting up and maintaining deployment environments using Linux and Nginx
  • Knowledge of best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service
  • Experience with automation/configuration management using either Puppet, Chef, or an equivalent
  • Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services
  • Strong experience with SQL and PostgreSQL
  • Advanced understanding of object-oriented programming
  • Experience with Ruby on Rails, along with common libraries such as Sidekiq
  • Intermediate understanding of the syntax of Ruby and its nuances
  • Intermediate understanding of Javascript and Jquery
  • Familiarity with front end frameworks such as Vue, React or Angular
  • Familiarity with concepts of MVC, ORM, and RESTful design patterns
  • A knack for writing clean, readable Ruby code
  • Ability to integrate multiple data sources and databases into one system
  • Understanding of fundamental design principles behind a scalable application
  • Able to create database schemas that represent and support business processes
  • Able to implement automated testing platforms and unit tests
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as Git
  • Familiarity with development aiding tools such as Bower, Bundler, Rake, etc.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration

Compensation: Salary commensurate with knowledge, experience, and qualifications.

Politech is an Equal Opportunity Employer that greatly values diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

NOW HIRING: Social Media Manager

Company: Matthew Hussey
Website: https://www.howtogettheguy.com
Headquarters: Los Angeles, California, United States

Are you a killer social media manager with experience increasing engagement on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram? Do you live on social media 24/7 and wouldn’t dream of being out of touch for more than a few hours? Are you primarily a people organizer, with the ability to plan a schedule and get others to stick to your timeline? Would you be psyched to manage a social media community of smart, successful women seeking dating, relationship, and confidence advice?

Well, you might be the rock star social media process manager we’re looking for.

This is a critical role on our team that requires a super organized, independent self-starter. We need you to not be shy about keeping others — even our CEO — to a schedule. If you need a lot of hand holding, you won’t be a great fit for this role.

It’s also not a content creation role — we’re using existing content that Matthew creates, and someone else will be delivering that weekly. Your process management, organizational, and teamwork skills, as well as your flexibility, will be more important than anything in this role.

The qualities we’re looking for include:

– High level of organizational skills and ability to organize others
– Process mindset and ability to see the big picture from a linear, process-driven perspective and organize others within that
– Confidence, but no ego
– Ability to keep others on schedule, no fear in your project management skillset
– Lots of flexibility
– High digital availability and willingness to grow with us
– Passion for and devotion to the work we do and our community
– Dependability
– Prior experience as a freelancer preferred
– Two years of social media management experience preferred (bonus points if it’s for a media personality)

Responsibilities include:

– Process managing two designers, a video editor, and our CEO to get posts planned, ready, and scheduled (we have someone else who will source & deliver content from our existing library)
– Finalizing approvals from Matthew
– Scheduling daily posts and tweets
– Creating a social media content schedule every month
– Helping put in place a team to review comments and respond to messages with questions about our programs
– Willingness to speak up with ideas as well as take final direction where necessary

Why Join Us?

You’ll work remotely with a good amount of flexibility. We are 100% remote, with team members based in LA, NY, the UK, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
Make an impact – help women level-up in their relationships, self-esteem, and happiness.
Be part of a positive, upbeat team that deals with each other with respect and gratitude.

HOURS

This role starts as part-time freelance for 20 hours per week, but we are looking for someone who wants to be full time and expect the hours to grow rapidly. Given that most of our customers are in the U.S., we generally work U.S. business hours, so you should have consistent availability within 9 am - 6 pm Eastern time hours (if you’re an early bird and want to work from Pacific Time, or a night owl who wants to work from European hours, we don’t care, but we’ll need to be reliably able to reach you during these hours). You’ll need consistent availability for team video calls between the hours of 11 AM - 3 PM Eastern.
To be considered, please write a cover letter to recruiting@howtogettheguy.com as to why you’d be a good fit in the body of your email. DO NOT send a CV or other attachments (if you attach ANYTHING to it, your application will automatically not be read). We prioritize culture fit, attention to detail, and superstar-quality writing when selecting candidates.

You’ll be interviewing with our Customer Support Lead, Courtney. Her favorite color is red, so she’d be pleased if you put that word somewhere in your subject line when sending your letter.

Looking forward to meeting you!

NOW HIRING: Head of Product

Company: Scrapinghub
Website: https://scrapinghub.com
Headquarters: Cork, Ireland

Scrapinghub is on pace to grow revenue more than 5x in the next 3 years, with the largest growth coming from our SaaS product business lines. We are seeking our new Head of Product to lead our Product team and define our strategy as we enter this new phase of growth.

Our comprehensive web crawling stack powers crawls of over 9 billion pages per month and is used by everyone from individual developers to Fortune 100 companies.

Defining process, developing talent, and guiding the growing team through the growth that we are experiencing is just the start. As a member of the leadership team, you will help set overarching business strategy and goals, identify opportunities, and maintain relationships with key stakeholders (internal & external). Ultimately, your responsibility is to ensure the success of Scrapinghub’s products.

This is the role for you if:
  • You’ve done this job before, either in a growth-stage company, or in a team/division experiencing exponential growth
  • You’re eager to take advantage of a rare opportunity to lead a global product team in a category leading technology, with competitive salary and equity participation

Job Responsibilities:
  • You will be responsible for the commercial success of Scrapinghub’s product portfolio:
  • Evaluate opportunities to determine which to pursue and, perhaps equally important, which not to pursue
  • Know the customers better than anyone - using data to understand what they do (SaaS metrics, financial KPIs, usage data & analytics platforms), and talking to them to understand why
  • You will be a key spokesperson for our products internally and externally and you should be comfortable engaging with customers, partners and internal teams.
  • Lead our product culture and spearhead improvements as the Product team grows and Scrapinghub expands:
  • Creating a consistent methodology for iterative product development, to be used across all of Scrapinghub: research, design, development, and delivery
  • Enforcing Lean principles to ensure we are continually shipping & learning from real customers
  • Reinforcing Scrapinghub’s values (Open by Default, Team Players, Ambitious, Customer Centric) via our processes, and making sure we’re living them, as a team, in how we execute
  • It goes without saying, but your role will include all of the standard parts of Product Management not already mentioned above:
  • Own the product roadmaps and work with the leadership team to develop long term product strategy and the Go To Market strategy for the organisation as a whole.
  • Develop strong partnerships with Engineering, Customer Success, Sales, and Marketing to create a well-rounded product offering
  • Deep strategic thinking about our place in the market and how we will continue to differentiate ourselves in fulfilling customers’ web data needs

REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience:
  • 8+ years years experience in managing growing product development teams, ideally within a SaaS product environment. This includes recruitment, talent development, and adapting processes to an expanding team.
  • Strong track record of delivering successful (commercially and otherwise) products
  • Deep experience in the commercial side of product management, with past responsibility for the marketing, sales and full customer lifecycle around your product(s)
  • Experience in building business cases for product investment decisions

The Intangibles:
  • Great people skills: Insight into those you work with, coupled with the tact and humour to communicate complex concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization.
  • Always persuadable by evidence: You are always open to changing your mind when the evidence dictates. Conversely, you use well structured data to inform your own opinions and persuade others.
  • Technically competent: You are able to quickly learn and understand the technical details of Scrapinghub’s products, and how/why our customers use them. This doesn’t mean that you need a formal software development background, but you will be involved in deeply technical decisions and conversations.
  • A love of talking to customers and an insatiable curiosity to understand how and why they use Scrapinghub’s products.
  • Unwavering focus on results: revenue and growth targets, delivering quality features on-time, great NPS scores, etc - regardless of the metric, you love setting the bar high and driving for results.
  • A great fit with Scrapinghub’s culture

BENEFITS
  • The work environment is unique. Your desk is as you want it, where-ever you want it.
  • We love fostering and nourishing new ideas and bringing them to market
  • We work across 30 different countries - so one hugely diverse, multicultural family!
  • Honestly - we have some of the brightest minds in our industry. We are unquestionably thought leaders!
  • We make exceptional Products and we are constantly looking to improve the customer experience.
  • Get the chance to work with cutting-edge open source technologies and tools.
  • Enroll in our Company’s Share Option Program

NOW HIRING: Senior UI/UX Designer, Product

Company: Whitespectre
Website: https://www.whitespectre.com
Headquarters: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

We are a remote-first company with a globally distributed team of 70. We’re proud of the way we get great work done. Our clients love working with us and we partner with them on long-term projects. Our teams are engaged and excited about our work.

We’re looking for a smart, hardworking, creative, and collaborative individual to help us create intuitive and engaging experiences for our client partners.

This is a part-time role to start with the possibility to move to full-time.

What You’ll Do

Our projects are a combination of launching then evolving brand-new products, as well as taking existing products to the next level. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, the wider UX team, and our client partners to deliver beautiful, engaging experiences. That’s everything from wires and prototyping, to presenting to stakeholders, to reviewing user feedback, to designing polished interfaces, and overall, working hand in hand with the team to ensure that the software and mobile apps we create both look and ‘feel’ great.

As an ideal candidate, you’ll have:
  • Several years experience in UI/UX design, with experience designing both responsive sites and applications as well as native mobile applications (IOS, Android, React Native).
  • Experience working within a team across the entire product lifecycle, from user research to requirements gathering and prototyping to launch and feedback and iteration cycles
  • A strong foundation in visual design principles (typography, layout, color, etc.)and using animations to communicate with the user.
  • Excellent English-language communication skills, both spoken and written. Because of our close collaboration with our English-speaking clients, you must be able to engage confidently with them in design discussions.
  • Availability to work within a fast moving team (working 11am - 8pm Central European time)
  • A robust portfolio of past projects and live examples you can walk us through.
Please provide a link to your current portfolio. Candidates without portfolios will not be considered.

To be successful in this role, you’ll also be:
  • Passionate about creating products that deliver both a first-class user experience as well as real business results.
  • Seriously detail-oriented. You pride yourself on delivering designs that are accurate and consistent. You enjoy thinking through the multiple scenarios and perspective in each user experience you create.
  • Committed to keeping up with ‘best practices’ and new design thinking. You’re naturally curious, you’re constantly reviewing new apps and products, you can speak comfortably on the pros and cons of the latest design trends
  • Comfortable in fast-paced, collaborative environments.

Why is it good to work with us?

We know that big ideas and big results only happen when you have the right people, working together smartly - whether that’s across the room or across the globe. We make the work fun and rewarding.
Because we work on cool projects. Sure, we can list the latest set of technologies that we use, but that is a given. What's more interesting is how they are used - the design, the architecture, the approach to solving business problems. And we do that across multiple clients - each and every one we're excited to work with.
Because we believe in constant learning and exploring - whether that’s a new skill, a new role, or a new way of seeing. And because we've found that we learn the most when we take on new challenges as a team. We’re happy that people love working with us (and still have lives outside of work). Want to know more? Our team is 100% remote, with 29 people distributed all over the world.
We’re looking for an experienced, thoughtful Engineering Manager to help lead and coach our growing team of 10 engineers.

The Role

You’ll lead, coach, and mentor our team of 10+ engineers on how to be more effective individual contributors, as well as stronger team players. You’ll hold weekly check-ins (1:1s) with each team member to share feedback, check in on goals, and celebrate individual strengths and contributions. You’ll provide career development, planning, and guidance to the team by aligning individual and personal/professional growth goals to broader company objectives.

As a part of the leadership team, you’ll work closely with others on the Product, Design, Marketing, and Support teams. By championing an ethos of continuous improvement, you’ll help us grow the expertise of the team in performant, reliable, scalable, maintainable architecture. To drive these improvements, you’ll be responsible for analyzing team performance with qualitative and quantitative benchmarks, ensuring that the quality of our engineering is continually raised. From these metrics, you will help to refine, document, and unify our engineering best practices and project management processes and tooling across the existing area-specific teams.

As our first dedicated Engineering Manager, you’ll have the opportunity to help define and shape what an important leadership role for our company going forward. You’ll contribute to creating plans for prioritizing technical and resourcing challenges within the organization, and help with the recruiting efforts to meet those challenges. You’ll assist with the hiring, onboarding, and training of both new engineers, as well as future engineering leadership.

Here are some things you may do on a given day:
  • Conduct 1:1s with your team members
  • Assess code reviews and provide feedback on how to review more effectively
  • Review, track, and give feedback on team member progress vs personal objectives and professional development goals
  • Investigate stalled stories and coach team members on how to unblock work or prioritize effectively
  • Review upcoming product priorities, team capacity, and make recommendations on how to structure our team to achieve company long term goals
  • Propose an experiment to tweak a project management process to improve work throughput, along with the metrics to be measured to validate or disprove the hypothesis
  • Update or clarify our internal engineering and project management playbooks based on feedback/uncertainty from the team
  • Collaborate with the design team to help define how work is finalized and handed off to the engineering team for maximum success in implementation
  • Read an article on a project management technique and draft an internal summary for discussion with the team

On the first day you will:
  • Meet your team and get familiar with how we work
  • Setup your environment and tooling

In the first week you will:
  • Hold initial 1:1s with everyone on the engineering team and participate in our weekly engineering meeting
  • Review and become familiar with our existing project management and professional development approaches
  • Improve our onboarding course and team documentation based on your experience

In the first month you will:
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the business goals, engineering team goals, and each team member’s personal strengths / areas for improvement, goals, and objectives, and how those relate to the broader company goals.
  • Begin tracking key workflow and engineering metrics to provide a baseline for continued improvement.

To succeed in this position, you should have:
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring a distributed team of engineers
  • A strong ability to listen and understand others, coupled with humility and empathy. You naturally build excellent relationships with your team, and peers, and are able to deliver difficult feedback when needed, in a constructive and supportive manner.
  • A high degree of technical competency, with the ability to break down complex topics and make them seem approachable
  • An obsession with continuously improving the way you and your team work (you believe that improving the way we work is even more important than doing the work)
  • Tenacity combined with the willingness to question assumptions and dig deep to find the root cause of user confusion or issues

Who you’ll work with:
  • Justin Stern, CTO - You’ll be reporting to Justin, and partnering with him to strengthen our remote engineering culture and agile project management processes.
  • Beka Rice, Head of Product - You’ll work with Beka to understand our products in detail and learn all the ways that our customers use them.
  • Ian Misner, Support Team Lead - You’ll work with Ian to ensure that our engineering team delivers consistent and increasing value to our customers, and how every decision we make impacts our users.

REQUIREMENTS

You

In the past you’ve been a successful engineer. However, your real passion has been leading, mentoring, and coaching people to accomplish great things. Your other passion is helping your team evolve to the next stage in their careers, whether that is becoming an even more effective individual contributor, growing into a management role, or transitioning into an entirely new role.

You love keeping up-to-date with the latest engineering management best practices and tools, and are constantly tweaking and improving the way you work. You’re curious and excited to learn, so adopting new tooling or digging into a new app is something you’re keen to tackle. (After all, it is a new experience for you to learn from!) You know how to operate a hydraulic press, or at least watched a YouTube video about them and think they’re totally rad.

Finally, you can’t wait to join a growing team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ships their work. You’re a great writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a pitch document, chatting in Slack, editing a wiki page, or drafting a project retrospective. You know that great coaching is really about great communication, so you’re committed to explaining your thought process clearly. You can communicate fluently in English, or at least as close as anyone can come to fluent English, because really, it’s English.

BENEFITS

Our team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, Clubhouse, Google Docs, Basecamp, and a few short, weekly meetings via Zoom — we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time that’s free of distractions.

As a remote team, we believe that regular meetups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so in addition to our quarterly planning meet-ups, you should also be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about what those are like? Check out our recap of our last team retreat (SkyTrip), which brought the entire team to a Scottish estate for a week. It’s a plus if you think (like we do) that bears are absolutely the coolest animals in the forest. 🐻You can see what the team has to say about working with us here.

Process

After an initial screening, you’ll get an email with a few questions to answer. Following that, you’ll have a few ~45 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company.

Here are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:
  • Competitive salary
  • 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June 😀)
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents)
  • 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents)
  • 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers
  • Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection
  • Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive
  • Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences)
  • Home office or co-working allowance
  • A Kindle to help you keep learning
We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.

Applications accepted through September 17th.

NOW HIRING: Senior Software Engineer, Postmark

Company: Wildbit
Website: https://wildbit.com
Headquarters: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Postmark (a product of Wildbit) is a cloud email infrastructure product that allows businesses to send and receive transactional email from their applications. We aim to make email seamless, dependable, and easy for development teams. We exist to support our team, and our values and products reflect the care and intention that we operate with. You would be joining a small team of ~30 people, where you would have the opportunity to make a big impact on the evolution of the Postmark product.

Our Technology

We are transitioning Postmark from a co-located mixed-OS environment to a cloud-native app running exclusively on Linux. You will be primarily working in C#/.NET, but other technologies and infrastructure you will use on a daily basis include: AWS services (such as Lambda, RDS, and ECS), MySQL, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, Kafka, Grafana, Kibana, and others.

The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Postmark team, we’re excited for you to:
  • Contribute C# code to improve and enhance our APIs and backend services
  • Design software that strikes the right balance between delivering on business needs and delivering the quality of code you are proud to ship
  • Guard the health of our systems — you’ll be part of an on-call schedule and help mitigate system abuse by spammers
  • Set clear expectations around your work, knowing when to break down nebulous tasks into manageable parts, and communicating that to your teammates
  • Shape the Postmark system over time to remain highly reliable and scalable, through system design, infrastructure improvements, code optimizations, or other technical initiatives
  • Be a partner to Customer Support, Product, and Design, and collaborate with those teams cross-functionally

Typical day-to-day tasks could include:
  • Designing and scoping out the software needed to support company initiatives
  • Building RESTful APIs
  • Adding and managing new services and queues
  • Maintaining Windows and Linux servers
  • Building and scaling out infrastructure using automation tools such as Terraform and Ansible
  • Optimizing queries in MySQL

Requirements:

Engineers on Postmark have a tremendous amount of autonomy on the technical direction of our product, but are held to a high standard for the reliability, maintainability, and usability of code they write. With this autonomy, individual engineers are expected to evaluate the current landscape of our product, as well as consider future directions to develop the best solution for today, with the understanding that there will be inevitable time constraints associated with growing and maintaining a successful product like Postmark.
You will be a great fit for this role if you have a strong technical point of view that is coupled with pragmatism and an ability to execute. You should also be an excellent communicator and approach your conversations with a level of care and empathy.

Ideally, you have:
  • Experience designing, building, and operating large systems with varying scalability, availability, and performance requirements
  • Experience with various deployment architecture paradigms, such as zero downtime deploys, canary servers, etc.
  • Implemented web services using Twelve-Factor app principles
  • Familiarity with email-specific topics, such as SMTP, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, etc.
  • Managed system infrastructure and built system automation tools

Benefits:
  • Remote-first team — we optimize for asynchronous communication and creating space for focused-work
  • Full health benefits for US-based team members: medical, dental, vision (100% paid for employee and spouse/dependents)
  • Company-paid retreats
  • Quarterly profit sharing
  • Conferences and career development
  • Currently experimenting with 4-day work weeks with flexible hours
Wildbit is an equal opportunity employer and proud of it. We’re committed to building a diverse team, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
